Build character in your child by instilling
the characteristics you value such as honesty, self-discipline, compassion,
respect, etc.
Help your child learn to take responsibility
when he/she makes mistakes. Teach them to apologize when doing wrong
and learn from their mistakes. There may be consequences for poor
decisions but it is these consequences that help build good standing
citizens.
Focus on manners at home and instill the same
standards in your child when he/she is at school.
Let your child come up with reasons of why
something should be done or not done to help develop good judgment.
(If I run across the street, what consequences might there be?)
Help your child understand the importance of
discipline and explain that by creating boundaries, you are letting your
child know that you care about him/her. Remind your child that you
have confidence and are proud of him/her.
Send a nurturing message to your child
letting them know that you love them and you will help them learn even
through their mistakes.
When you are angry and want to correct your
child, put the correcting discussion on hold until you are clearer about the
issue at hand.
