How may I obtain the Academic Excellence
Indicator System information?
How
old must my child be to start school ?
In
accordance with state law, students who are five (5) years old on or before
September 1 are eligible for the kindergarten program. A child may be enrolled
in the first grade if he or she is at least six (6) years of age at the
beginning of the current school year or has been enrolled in the first grade, or
completed kindergarten, in the public schools of another state prior to
transferring to the district. (TEC 42.003(c))
Exception
to the rule is made for students who have been enrolled in the first grade in
the public schools in another state prior to transferring to a Texas public
school or have completed kindergarten in the public schools in another state
prior to transferring to a Texas public school. Students to whom the exception
applies shall be enrolled in the first grade at the time of registration.
Students
who are at least five years of age and have been enrolled for at least a half
year (as determined by actual school days in the current KISD school calendar)
in a public kindergarten program in another state prior to enrolling in the
district may remain in kindergarten provided space is available on the home
campus (or the parent can provide transportation to another campus in which
space is available) Also, in order to be promoted to first grade, students must
demonstrate academic achievement or proficiency in skills and abilities required
in kindergarten.
Any
child who will be 3 or 4 years old on or before September 1, 2007, and who lives
in the KISD is eligible to attend the district’s full-day kindergarten. If you
have a child who is eligible, please attend the KISD PreK Round Up to register
your child or contact Evanita Ramos, Curriculum Director, at 361-592-3387.
Parents
should bring the following to registration:
·
Child official birth certificate
·
Immunization Record
·
Child’s social security card

during the teacher’s conference period or after school. You can also e-mail your
child’s teacher with questions you may have. An e-mail list is provided on this
website.
What is the grading
system?
Grading System
(From Page 10 of the 2007-2008 Elementary Parent-Student Handbook)
The evaluation of student achievement is one of the important functions of the
teachers. Student academic achievement is determined by using a numerical
score on a scale of 0-100.
Numerical scores are used for language arts, mathematics, science, health and
social studies.
Letter grades are used for fine arts, and physical education. The accepted
marking system is as follows (19TAC 75.191 (a), (d), (f)
Pre-Kindergarten
S = Satisfactory
N= Not at this time/not
introduced
P = Part of the time
M=Mastery
Kindergarten
S = Satisfactory
I = Improvement Needed
N = Not introduced
M=Mastery
First Grade
A
90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
F 50-69
An honor roll is published in grades 1-4 at the end of each (6) weeks
grading period. It is an all A or A-B Honor Roll. This is not an
average or point system. One grade lower than a B will eliminate the
student from the honor roll.
What are the attendance guidelines?
State law requires that a student between the ages of 6 and 18 attend
school as well as any applicable accelerated instruction programs, extended
year programs, or tutorial session unless the student is otherwise legally
exempted or excused. A student who voluntarily attends or enrolls
after his or her eighteenth birthday is required to attend each school day.
If a student 18 or older has more than five unexcused absences in a
semester, however, the district may revoke the student's enrollment.
The student's presence on school property would be unauthorized and may be
considered trespassing. Upon enrollment in school, PreK3, PreK4 and
Kinder students will be required to attend school. PreK3, PreK4 and
Kinder students will be subject to compulsory attendance laws including
filing truancy in court. School employees must investigate and report
violations of the state compulsory attendance law.
A complaint against the parent may be filed in court of the student is
absent from school on ten or more days or parts of days within a six month
period in the same school year, or is absent on three or more days within a
four week period.
When a student must be absent from school, the student-upon returning to
school-must bring a note, signed by the parent that describes the reason for
the absence. A note signed by the student, even with the parent's
permission, will not be accepted unless the student is 18 years or older.
